Well since I was called a "liberal" by the guest speaker, John Mica...I feel obligated to fire back at him.
He calls himself a conservative, but I think he spends money like those Liberals he is so quick to attack.
He has no problem spending 3 trillion dollars in Iraq....and I'm sure he will vote to authorize much more when the time comes.
He has no problem continuing to spend 20+ Billion a year fighting the failure that is our war on drugs. (another war that we can never win)
He has no problem increasing the size, and budget, for the Department of Education.
He has no problem using government money to bail out banks, or airlines.
He has no problem continuing millions of dollars in aid to Israel. (and increasing our involvement in the area)
He has no problem keeping the government waist deep in health care.
But hes pretty quick at jumping on those "liberals" for spending a million dollars, or increases the size of government somewhere else.
I'm sorry, but in my book you are not a conservative with those stances, you are a hypocrite if you call yourself a conservative with those stances.
He has some great ideas, and has done great things. Don't get me wrong...but I just don't think he is a conservative...I guess that is where this new "Neo-conservative" term comes in...maybe he falls into that.
Matt
He should have refered to you as bi-liberal.
Matt
The key word in your post is " hypocrite ". Great post and I agree with most of it if you want a true liberal agreeing with you.
I enjoyed a lot of what Rep. Mica said during his speech, but I was disappointed that he was unwilling to consider applying his free market beliefs to the financial industry.
His reluctance to question the Federal Reserve disturbed me, because I often see the same reaction from people on the left.
Why? Big government conservatives and big government liberals can't speak out against the central bank, because it's ability to conjure money out of nothing is the only way to make their enormous budgets possible.
Otherwise, I really enjoyed the dinner. Virginia Foxx mentioned that she was surprised that Ron Paul was not ranked within the top 10 Conservatives in the U.S. House, which helped make up for Rep. Mica calling him a liberal.
Honestly my biggest hope is that a lot of people - Republicans especially - read Ron Paul's new book.
I really was not that impressed with this John Mica guy.
Some of the stuff he said was alright, but i felt he was just not too effective. He contradicted himself too many times. My views almost identically mirror matt's post.
He lost me when he tried to equate our glorious revolution with the war in Iraq.
Andrew
At the time of our Revolution 1/3rd of the people were Loyalists, 1/3rd didn't care either way, and 1/3rd wanted to be free. The 1/3rd wanting to be free won out. That might be a similarity.
Sark,
I have heard some reports that your statistic is false, but whatever. There is an important difference to note, nobody from outside came to England to topple the kings regime for us. We moved away and did it ourselves for the most part. We threw off that form of government because it didn't represent us. There is no comparing the two, the revolution and the occupation. Its a disgrace to our revolution to be compared with an undeclared and unconstitutional war.
