A commenter on this blog wrote: “Obama makes only Fascist-like threats regarding the oil leak” That Fascist part is what is concerning me. I am uneasy about the pressure Republicans are putting on the president over this oil leak, and here is why: It is in his nature to take over as much as he can. His guiding mantra is “don’t let a good crisis go to waste.” So far he is only federalizing, i.e., putting more government control over the whole debacle. Critics should not be pushing him toward nationalizing the oil industry which many in his base are already calling for.
When Katrina hit,the federal response to Katrina was governed by the 1988 Stafford Act, which says that in natural disasters, on-shore states are in charge, not Washington. The federal obligation is to “support. . . States and local assistance efforts.” Even though Bush was following the law, he was clobbered by Democrats for not rushing in and taking over.
Now Obama, contrary to his nature, is actually admitting government does not have the know-how to solve a problem. He is willing to let private enterprise tackle the problem which has to be going against every fiber of his being. And, he is getting clobbered. Republicans can’t have it both ways. Either they believe in private enterprise, or they believe in government takeover.

BP has drilled beyond the 18,000 foot limit tapping an extremely pressurized and extremely hot mixture of natural gas and oil Ft 5000 below the ocean surface.
This is like suddenly trying to get a volcano to stop exploding or send a space craft not yet build to some uncharted part of space.
Man has never had to deal with such negligence on this scale before.
To this point we have only seen PR and bullshit.
The Obama Admin. has no more answers than BP at this point. When they can find the answers they definitely need to take charge.
I'm sure they have experts trying to come to some conscience as to how to stop the oil spilling into the Gulf stream.

I'm sure some conservative like Guy will deny this is a man made disaster.
Over the next decade this will kill thousands of all species including many humans.
Think of not just the gulf coast fisheries but island nations in third world countries, Mexico and Central America.
There're some real criminals responsible for this desaster we need to find who made these desisions to go beyond the 18,000 Ft depth limit.
This is an example of the problems greed and know nothing mentality can cause.
Lets hope someone out there has an answer to this mess and the right people listen.
When this first started people were saying that it was Obama's Katrina. I think they are apples and oranges.
I certainly agree that we don't want to nationalize the oil industry and that Obama is likely to use this "crisis" as an excuse. He's already relentlessly attacking BP and the oil industry in general. He took too long to show any real concern and that has hurt him politically. Sarah Palin points out he was a huge recipient of BP oil money as Senator and wonders if that is why he waited. However, there wasn't much he could actually do. Now there is, nuke it. That would work and in the context of it continuing to spew until August it must be considered. I really don't care who fixes it or who gets the credit, just fix it.
I also do think GWB dropped the ball on Katrina. Yes, the Governor and Mayor were terrible. Add to that years of Democrat policies that made the place a disaster waiting to happen. I don't think it's the time to dilly dally over whose responsible when people are homeless, starving and dying. Send the damn choppers, sort the politics out later.
Not so fast Lib. One reason BP has to go to such extremes is people like you won't let them drill onshore or even closer to shore. We can't do without oil. Drill baby drill.
Chris Matthews
Just in case you don't get the point.
Blogger,
I'm one of the 4 or 5 people that watch Matthews and I saw that show. He's an idiot but is probably reading the mind of Obama on this one.
I going to stay on Obama's back. I won't hold back out of fear that he will have an excuse to nationalize. That would be like coddling Muslims in the hope that they will like us. No, they want to kill us it doesn't matter what we say or do. Same with Obama, he wants to nationalize everything so I don't think this incident changes anything but the PR. It just ticks me off to see him demonize an entire industry after giving this very well a safety award earlier. Regulations in anticipation of this kind of disaster have been in place since 1994 and they weren't followed. He's culpable. If it had happened under Bush then Bush would have been culpable as well. He's got a photo op scheduled for Friday. I wonder what he will say.
Obama was slow to respond either to further his anti-oil agenda or because he took $77,000 in campaign contributions from BP either way he is taking another vacation while this disaster is happening. Golf takes precedence over the environment.
Yesterday, Obama Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told reporters,
“The fact of the matter is that this is a BP mess. It is a horrible mess. We will not rest until their job is done.”
Obviously, he wasn’t talking about his boss.
The Obama family will take their second vacation this month since the Gulf oil rig exploded that started the non-stop gusher.
Bush was blamed, unneccessarily for Katrina. It is only fair that Hussein Obama take full blame for failure to act. The US Govt. has done NOTHING (except the blame game) to stop this disaster. With our Navy, Coast Guard, and state and local agencies, we could surely mount some kind of effort to both contain the spill and catch the oil before it hits shore. But nothing. Absolutely nothing. Yet the fringe left news media refuses to do to Hussein Obama what they did to the far more competant Bush.
Same for soldier deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. Based on today's biased reporting, one would think that there are no military deaths in either country. Why no more "death counts" in newspapers. Care to answer this Liberal Socialist Sheep POV? After all, the politically correct warfighting policies that you and your kind advocate are the cause for our soldiers dying needlessly. LOL!! What happens when the nuke just splits open the earth releasing the entire pressurize reserve of oil and natural gas at once setting off one hell of a bomb plus a cloud of nuclear waste.
That should at least end Obama's political career which seem to be the number one priority of know nothing conservatives.
We have seen the damage people like you can do when in power.
Yeah, I had forgotten about the oil they hit in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
You remember the stories about Obama's fellow employees at a law firm that said he sat around on company time with his feet up and a lap top working on his books about himself. He's just plain lazy. Talk is all he can muster.

Did the bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima explode over a volcano of natural gas and hot oil 5000 ft under water?
“Obama makes only Fascist-like threats regarding the oil leak”-Sarkazien
Oil exploration, drilling, and distribution is a service to the people and the government, and the oil industry is paid for this service. This is a big enough emergency that the government should be doing everything they can do and everything they can do to facilitate permits, transportation, whatever the people ask for that are fighting the leak. THAT is not Federalizing the oil companies. When B.O said he was sending SWAT to the rigs and he was going to keep his boot on their necks, that sounded like Fascism. American industry should not have to worry about Fascism. But, when a monumental catastrophe happens the government should help, facilitate, and provide. OIL is a service to the country. It is a service to the people and the government. The government and the people cannot function without oil.
Nationalization of OIL should not even enter into the discussion, it wouldn't have a year and a half ago, BUT nationalization of a major
catastrophe like this is lawful. In this case, the government is the landlord as OIL leases the area to drill.
This will be B.O's Katrina. He will deserve it. President Bush did not deserve the Katrina crap. On FEMAs web page and in there charter, THEY ARE NOT first responders.
POV- Japan is a volcano.
I never liked the BP "green" commercials, hated them actually. I found them obnoxious. They were political commercials pandering to the left. It was a huge waist of money and served no real purpose. BUT with sleezebag legislators like then Senator B.O going after them at every turn, and demanding monetary gifts to keep from legislating against them, what are they supposed to do?

Did I say that? It was Obama that gave them the safety award. Do we know it was BP's fault? Do we know it wasn't terrorism? Why did Obama send a SWAT team? It seems to me Obama is saying BP acted stupidly without any evidence. Sound familiar? What's with the blame game anyway, is now the time? Shouldn't we concentrate on fixing it first? How many thousands of gallons have spewed in the time it took me to write this sentence?
We could try a bunker buster before we nuke it. Russia has successfully stopped natural gas leaks with nukes. I guarantee it's on the table. BTW lib I learned about the nuke solution on NPR.
Where do I get the bumper sticker Sark? I want one.

You are far more stupid than I have given you credit to this point. So you think this can blow up the world? Going by this dumb, dumb statement, then wouldn't it stand to reason that an enemy nuke over a few of our oil dereks would "split" the US wide open? Think before you vomit liberal filth there fluffer.
If a nuke would work, then why wouldn't you use it? Do you have something against nukes? Nukes kept us from speaking Russian as well as a million lives in WWII. Although you are a raging idiot of the lowest order, even a dunce like you should be a fan of nukes.
We should give BP a pass and drill in Colorado, Wyoming, and Alaska. We need the oil to run our foreign cars that are foreign because your unions have ran all the US auto manufactures out of business or overseas. This current oil spill and domestic climate can be put squarely on the shoulders of you and the fellow sheep. In your bid to kill business, you pushed oil companies to drill offshore instead of onshore. Hence an oil leak developed.
One interesting fact brought forth here. A couple days after the oil leak was discovered, a headline circulated very, very briefly concerning SWAT Teams being deployed to oil rigs. Why was this? And more importantly, why has this not been reported on since? Strange things going on here.

The point of this post was: Because of the seriousness of this crisis, do we on the right want to join those on the left in pushing Obama in the direction it is in his nature to go i.e., nationalizing. Probably, the reason so far he has not gone there, is that he knows the government has neither the know-how nor the equipment to solve the problem. He does not want to get stuck with it.
We are talking here about stopping the flow, not about protecting the shores. As to the latter, he not only is demonstrating abominable leadership, but just as in Katrina, he is revealing how totally ineffective the government can be.

Another aspect to Obama's handling of the Gulf oil leak is his division of the parties. By parties I refer to the oil companies, the government and the people. I've never seen anything like it. It is in all corners of his executive actions and it didn't stop with this catastrophe. In ANY crisis like this, you want all the parties working together to overcome the problem.
I know he's never had ANY executive experience, but he goes out of his way to divide. It has to be on purpose.
Remember when he said he was sending in SWAT? He never said why, and the MSM never asked as far as I know. The rig was gone.

Why do you insist on dumbing yourself down is such difficult times?
To all: Originally in this post I wrote concerning Bush's handling of Katrina that he was following his philosophy. I learned later that was not correct. Actually, he was following the law: The federal response to Katrina was governed by the 1988 Stafford Act, which says that in natural disasters on-shore states are in charge, not Washington. The federal obligation is to “support. . . States and local assistance efforts.”
By law he could not intervene, but had to receive requests from local and state officials.
By the way, I hope no one was put off by my crankiness about chasing down Libs' rabbit holes. If you will note, I only get testy when someone does that to something I wrote before there is even a good discussion.
I posted this thread because I think I hear the faint whiff of a call for a strong leader to take over--like they do in China. What if our crises deepen the way the prophets are predicting they will? Will the people lose their nerve and turn to a stongman?

Back to the topic at hand. Someone on the WSJ tv program just said that the American people had come to believe a president was their fairy godmother–just wave a wand and all would be o.k. He added that Obama had been saying that government was better at doing everything. That came back to bite him.
Other speakers today have suggested that the people would be happy if Obama would put on a wet suit and swim down to the hole and slam it shut with his own mighty power–like superman.
I am still ancy about people acting as if the president is a king. The rest of you don't seem to be. Listen to what they are demanding of him.
Mark Steyn author of America Alone, makes the following observation: When the economic meltdown fell upon western society, from Iceland, through Europe to Bulgaria and Greece, people pounded on the doors of their parliaments demanding “Why do you not do more for us?”
Only in America did a popular movement form in the streets demanding “Why do you not do less for us.” If only that American spirit can live long enough to take our country back.
Conservatives
The Feds should take over ALL BP operations, leases, equipment, assets and bank accounts . Arrest top management for crimes against humanity.
Bring in the best expert from around the world to try to fix the environmental and economic catastrophe caused by gross negligence and I suspect criminal activities of BP top management.
This is the same mentality that caused the coal mine disaster in West Virginia with Massey Coal.
This spill is pouring over 4 million barrels of oil and natural gas a day into the Gulf of Mexico and as of today Sunday 5/30 2010 the spill is 168 million gallons.
Oil slicks will reach the coast of England before they get it stopped or it stops on its own. Fisheries around the world will be affected of killed.
This is a big F__ken deal.
Are Republicans inadvertently calling for big government is what I am asking.
From today's Meet the Press:
David Brooks, how is the administration doing?
MR. DAVID BROOKS: "Well, it depends what you expect. You know, if you think government is the center of national life, government can do everything, then you're disappointed. But for those of us who don't expect that of government, who know there are limits to government power, then we're--you know, we--people say, "Oh, he should do something. He should do something." James Carville says that. But what exactly should he do? He doesn't have a degree in underwater engineering. I don't expect government to do everything, and I don't expect they will be able to do everything."
On ABC’s This Week today, one of the speakers quoted an earlier writer who suggested that what we needed was a king and a president. The king would do the ceremonial things and the hand holding and the comforting speeches during crises and the president would do the managing. He added president Obama is being asked to do both.
In response, Joan Walsh of Salon.com observed that the people were not looking so much for a king as they were a daddy. She added that she did not need a daddy. She already had a good one.

The governments job is to do or attempt to do what individuals can't do.
BP has created a world wide catastrophe that will affect species of all types including humans for possibly centuries.
I can think of no greater reason for the government to get involved then to find answers or try to find answers to this massive ongoing damage caused by out of control greed and gross negligence of BP top management.
POV- That would be ...kin' not ...ken
Even Juan Williams on Fox News Sunday weighed in on the subject of this post. He pointed out that people were complaining because government is too big while others were complaining that it was not big enough.
My last three comments from all three Sunday talk shows was to reveal that finally people are beginning to think about the political implications of demanding too much from a president.
Blogger- Now they say we may be demanding too much of a president. Only because their guy is failing.
These people were calling for President Bush's head because he did not go against the law and become a first responder.
In a catastrophe as big as this one, it should be assumed the President would be in charge. This is not a one state thing as the stranded Katrina looters experienced, this is many states and the entire Gulf of Mexico and other countries.
When the house catches fire, if you can't put it out yourself, you call 911.
The government waists so much money and time on nonessential things, it robs from the real responsibilities of government. Everybody should be involved in this one. I don't think it relates to the current debate about large government except for the fact that the government is distracted too much from it's real duties.
Liberal POV “The government’s job is to do or attempt to do what individuals can't do.”
POV, the role of government will be the prominent debate of these next two elections. Obama’s lurch to the left has brought this issue front and center. However, look again at the title of this thread. Debating your issue comes later. Here I am asking my fellow conservatives do they really want to join you guys on the left in demanding dictatorshiplike activities from a president–an example is what you wrote: “The Feds should take over ALL BP operations, leases, equipment, assets and bank accounts” I think my compatriots on the right are on a slippery slope here by joining you in your demands. Again, he can’t put on a wetsuit and swim down and fix it. (I am talking about stopping the oil leak which the government obviously cannot do. I am not talking about the environmental damage. On this last, which is their role, the government is actually getting in the way of the states and demonstrating how incompetent it can be.)
Finally, this treating the presidency as if the president is one big father figure is something very recent in our history. Roosevelt was the only and last one. On the other hand, this abhorrence to a president as daddy figure is deep in my DNA. If you can believe it, I was about the only child in my school the teacher could call upon to debate: “Why Roosevelt should not run for a third term.”
Sarkazein, the left attacked Bush. That is understandable because they do believe in presidents as daddy figures.
I am concerned here about the Right attacking to score political points without thinking of the implications.
I think the point we obviously need to be making is that the leak demonstrates that neither governments or presidents can do everything. That would be good for people to think about.
Blogger
" Obama’s lurch to the left has brought this issue front and center. "

I hope somewhere in the world some other oil industry has the talent to find the answers to stopping the oil spill. BP has shown gross negligence and a failure to manage the catastrophe.
Let bring in the oil company with the best safety record in deep water drilling be it Exxon, Citco or Haliburton but take BP management out of the picture. BP will lose all assets or should before this is over.
I'm not a big believer in capital punishment but this could be a good argument for the death penalty. When such powerful CEOs act with such arragance and recklessness causing such a world wide event and the death of employees and lively hood of thousands let them know more is at stake than a corporate law suit.

Do you have the answers to my questions above?
How deep did BP drill? What is considered the engineering limit for such a well with todays techonolegy?
Do these oid rigs have to file a plan with anyone as to what they intend to do?
Do you believe hazardous industries should be free to do any damn thing they want in the name of profit?
What's the difference between a power or coal company creating a dam of coal ash or mining waste because it a cheap method of disposing of waste and BP taking short cuts that killed the eleven workers.
Should coal and power companies be free to build unsafe dams to break during floods and claim it was an act of God? BP has done far worst with their actions.

"did you not read the post that properly puts the blame for any such mishap with deep water drilling on those that refuse to allow drilling in shallow water and on land."
So BP gets a pass because they couldn't drill in National Parks or off the Carolina Coast?
Nothing wrong with them getting 11 employees killed and destroying the entire Gulf of Mexico, fishing industry, Gulf tourist industry, and millions of fish and wildlife.
My understanding is BP has the oil industries worst safety record.
Can none of you conservatives ask the questions for fear they won't have answers you want to believe or that supports your myths?
Why are answers to these basic questions not part of the media's coverage?
How deep is the well?
What's the deepest oil well in the Gulf?
Did engineers approve the depth? Who's engineers approved?
What about geologist did they approve of this depth?
Is this an oil leak or an oil volcano?
Does anyone know the actual PIS of the oil coming out of the ground?
Do we ( Mankind) have the technology to cap such pressure?
Who has the best team to deal with such a disaster? Exxon? Haliburton? Bubba Oil?
Why do conservatives not want to know the answers to these questions?
Even flat earthers should want to know the answers to such questions.
Is petty political idealogy more important than the earth or ocean?
The blame goes where it belongs. This is with those that force us to drill in difficult places when it could be safely done in many other areas. In other words, it lies with you, Liberlaproverbs18:2.
When I heard Obama/Holder announced they were opening criminal investigations on the oil leak, I thought how stupid that is. Infect BP's stock and employees as they battle the oil leak. Just as BP will need the best employees and cash, they have to hire attorneys and maybe even quit the company to keep from further incriminating themselves and miles and miles of other results. After the work is done, a review sure... but during is just complete idiocy by Obama and Holder.

The BP oil well gushing into the Gulf was gonig to be capped and not put into production like thousands of other wells across the country.
BP had over 700 serious safety citations to Exxon's one. BP can be the poster child of eccessive corporate power and greed.
The top management of BP should be arrested for crimes against humanity and this should serve as a warning to other mega corporations like Enron, Citi Bank, Wells Fargo, Massey Coal that if you put corporate profits ahead of humanity you could face the death penality.
If BP personnel broke any laws, they should be charged, tried, convicted if guilty, and punished under the rule of law just as illegal aliens should be deported under the rule of law.
This does not change the fact over regulation of the energy companies force them to drill in deep water when it could have been done in much safer places. As you support this over regulation the fault of the spill is yours, Liberalproverbs18:2.

"This does not change the fact over regulation of the energy companies force them to drill in deep water when it could have been done in much safer places."
They drill in deep water because there're huge amounts of oil there and they can.
You don't want the government to have safety oversight on oil rigs and coal mines?
Do you believe BP will foot the bill for ALL damage or will tax payers have to subsidize BP with cleanup help? Socialism for large corporations.
Your great god, Obama says that BP will pay for the problem. Have even you become so disillusioned that you no longer believe him.
As any fool but you would know, my argument and that of others on this site has always been about over regulation, not all regulation.
I notice you have nothing to say about the rule of law concerning oil spills and illegal aliens. Have you nothing to say as to why one should be enforced and not the other?
There are vast reserves in many safe places to drill that you and your charlatan cronies refuse to let production be achieved. The spill is your fault.

What do you consider over regulations, Building codes, limiting building on steep slopes and marsh lands, Mining in National Parks, Using dangerous chemicals, Banning Smoking in Restaurants?
What do you consider over regulations, Building codes, limiting building on steep slopes and marsh lands, Mining in National Parks, Using dangerous chemicals, Banning Smoking in Restaurants? _Liberalproerbs18:2
Yes. I would clarify the National Parks because Obama can unilaterally declare government land to be a National Monument, which is a type of park, without approval of Congress. Ms. Foxx, while she did drop the ball with the Blowing Rock land trade, sponsored a bill to correct this.
Building codes are a states rights issue. Reasonable codes are necessary to protect public safety. Codes to prevent development are not.
Steep slope issues are concerned with the wealthy protecting their million dollar views, not public safety. Building codes already cover steep slope issues and marsh land issues.
What is your definition for limiting the scope of codes?
Guy
" Reasonable codes are necessary to protect public safety."
This we agree on but many consevative are un reasonable people.
See all of the post where conservatives think its okay to torture.
The only thing unreasonable is your definition of torture.
However, what can one expect from one that is not knowledgeable and has no training (your words) and continues to post about which he admits he knows nothing?
Guy
"The only thing unreasonable is your definition of torture."
It's not my definition it's the definition of courts around the worlds including the US courts as well as treating signed by former US Presidents.
Your the one that wants to make his opinion fact.
You don't get to make up your own facts.

Liberalproverbs18:2, your liberal masters approved weatherboarding as not being torture. They did try to deny doing this, but there are all these annoying little videos with sound that show the words coming out of their mouths.
What treaties are you speaking of and when were they ratified by the Senate? Please link the court cases as well as the cases with the opposite decision having been reached. If what you say is true, why have no successful criminal charges been brought to trial concerning this issue?
You are showing your lack of training and knowledge again.
Guy
Water Boarding is torture and is Illegal.

I see you lied once again, Liberalproverbs18;2. I looked at several of your links before I became bored. They were all opinion pieces. You listed no signed, ratified treaties.
I guess you have no knowledge or training about this issue either.
