Board Of Education Public Forum OCTOBER 17

Public Forum on Superintendent Search October 17
The Watauga County Board of Education will hold a public forum regarding the new superintendent search on Monday, October 17, at the Watauga High School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Of course, they want to make it perfectly clear that they won't respond to anyone with a question! According to their press release, they will:
“will devote the forum to listening to public comments and will not be using this occasion to respond to questions about the search or about any possible candidates"
See Article in HighCountryPress here.

Is anyone here planning to attend? If so, please give us a report later.

I sure hope someone brings up the sudden early release for Watauga Schools on Monday that was announced late Friday. People looking int this have been told is was basically a demand so teachers could go to the Obama event in Wilkes County.

It is probably more plausible that Obama is going to swing by ASU on his way from Asheville to Wilkes. The early release is probably to stage a big welcome akin to the County Public Hearing.

I hear the early release is due to the fact there will be road closures for the bus tour. It was either release early or extend the day so buses can get the kids home. Doubt it is because the teachers want to go see him.

Just a reminder that the public comments about the search for a new Superintendent of Watauga County Schools is tonight.

Again, if any readers are able to attend, please let us know what transpires.

Obama is suppose to be landing in the field at the high school in a helicopter. Anyone going down to greet him?

I heard he was going to pop up out of Watauga Lake in a submarine.

Why is he in Boone, does anyone have a clue?

So basically he came to Boone, shut our town down for about 4 hours and stopped for candy. I'd cuss, but it won't do any good. Never in my life have I seen such as this.

Don't guess anyone has heard what's going on in the meeting yet? Maybe Inquiring Mind will let us know later on.

Didn't anyone tell him this is Virginia Foxx country? I thought he was suppose to have whizkids who know how to pick places to visit.

FYI...First time this has happened for a hire like this. I wonder who got this started? I think I can figure it out...

From the HCP coverage:

"Present were Chair Deborah Miller and board members John Welch and Delora Hodges; absent were board members Dr. Lee Warren and Steve Combs. The present board members listened and didn’t field questions or respond to comments. "

When only 60% of the school board shows up to hear the "public input", you have to wonder how serious they are about hearing it.

With the possible exception of Democrat John Welch, the BOE has been a disappointment to me! No answers to the public; no open communication; no real desire to consider public input.

I'm with you New Guy. Mr. Welch seems to be the one behind this new found openness. I doubt the other new member is "with it" enough to get this going. In my dealings with Mr. Welch he has been very open to comments and questions and is willing to give answers. Breath of fresh air for the Board. Shame on the members that didn't show up.

It is definitely John Welch behind the new transparency and openness. I submitted my comments to John Welch regarding the characteristics of leadership needed for a superintendent. John understands the importance of the superintendent as the board representative, school system representative, public relations, management, transparency, openness, etc. However, the rest of the board doesn't share John's attitude or opinion. Unfortunately John is also guided by a BOE attorney that shares similar pious attitudes as Deborah Miller, Lee Warren and Delora Hodges. Steve Combs is just plain useless. John Welch really cares about the public's view of the administration of the schools and wants to make the changes that are desperately needed. He needs to definitely be reelected and needs to be the next Chairman. That will mean that we need to replace Deborah Miller and Steve Combs in this election. Then we will need to replace Delora Hodges and Lee Warren in the next election. To replace these people, we need to find some people who are willing to communicate, be open and transparent and actually listen with a spirit not a pious smug attitude.

You don't see our County Chair, Nathan Miller, acting like the BOE Chair, Deborah Miller. Just who does she think she is? Oh, that's right, when Dan Soucek asked her share a little her background, her first response was "I am married to Joe Miller of the Cheap Joe Art Supply Millers." And, it was Dr. Hemric that reminded her that she had been in the school system as well (a teacher's assistant). And, as for Delora, she was so busy worshiping Deborah Miller and Dr. Hemric that she wasn't able to share anything about herself or how she saw herself in the role of a BOE member. She was just glad that Dr. Hemric and Deborah Miller had everything under control. Yeah, mindless yes person, needs to go; we didn't elect her to be Deborah's lap dog.
