The FBI and A Worm in the Apple

Copied from Radio WAMC

"Apple says building that kind of software the government is asking for would amount to building a whole "new version of the iPhone operating system," customized to lift the security restrictions. Here's what CEO Tim Cook said:

"In the wrong hands, this software — which does not exist today — would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone's physical possession. ...
"The government suggests this tool could only be used once, on one phone. But that's simply not true. Once created, the technique could be used over and over again, on any number of devices.

White House spokesman objects: "They are not asking Apple to redesign its product or to create a new backdoor to one of their products. They're simply asking for something that would have an impact on this one device,"

But Apple says such a tool, once created, would be too easy to reuse. "They don't want this software in the world," Green says. "Once they build it, they're potentially going to have to break it out every time the FBI comes back.""

This debate is way above my pay grade. Perhaps some savvy reader can understand better. However, if there is any possibility that Apple is telling the truth, I would like to see this one go to the upper courts.

Most anything else that the FBI would have a warrant to enter can be entered with demolition if access is not forthcoming. But, the brain cannot be forced open (only persuaded) and now the IPhone. I say water-board (persuade) the terrorist's mother, maybe she knows the password.... it's worth a gallon or two of tap water and an old dish towel.

There is probably a YOUTUBE video showing exactly how to unlock an IPhone.

My belief is that Apple already has the technology to crack the phone and don't want to admit it. Doing so would freak out their customers and put a crimp in Apple's promise of complete privacy to them. Apple will ultimately exhaust all of their arguments for the PR benefit and then acquiesce to the FBI, just before they show up at Tim Cook's door with handcuffs for him. Then Apple will make a huge deal about the cost of the mandate and ask for government reimbursement of something they already have. Like an infamous Dem once said, "Never let a crisis go to waste."

I am on the side of Apple. If the FBI needs a phone opened, then get a warrant and have apple open the phone. But the government wants complete access to ALL phones without a warrant. Freedom is vanishing folks. Trump pissed me off with his "boycott" of apple.
