It's an hour long so I don't know how many of you will watch it. The dude is entertaining, it goes quick. I do hope the liberals check it out because he rips Republicans as have many conservatives.

Sorry I can't watch Beck for an hour.

I'm a progressive and a liberal and proud of it.

Please explain to me what you think a socialist is?

Please explain what you believe capitalism is?

Was Dickens world a pure capitalist world?

Do todays conservative want a pure capitalist society? Do you really want to do away with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, all welfare, child labor laws, worker safety laws?

The highest standards of living and freedom are in countries with strong social safety nets of education, health care, living wage controlled by government. These countries being Norway, Sweden, Canada, France to name a few.

All of these countries have Democracies, Free Markets ( capitalism ).

What are your conservative models of pure capitalism? Columbia? Argentina? Pre 1930 America?

What do you people think you want? What's your model?

Guy posted this on another thread but it speaks to all conservative's problem of lack of vision.

I have yet to see a Republican with a vision for a brighter world.

Liberal Socialist Sheep POV,

So you are proud of being a progressive liberal? And what do you have to be proud about? Is it the blatent anti-American sentiment you spew every day of your wretched life? Is it the fact you contribute to deaths of American soldiers each day? Is it spitting on returning Vietnam Vetrans? Is it promoting government control into the lives of Americans? Is it choosing illegal aliens over Americans for health care and jobs? Is it never having solutions to the whining you do?

Which is it? LOL!!! Tough questions. Tough questions.

I see Lib tosses out the tread on his first sentence. My first inclination was to delete his two post but ya'll know how I try to avoid that sort of thing even if I take a little heat for my reluctance. So I won't.

All I will do is ask Lib to please not hijack threads. If you don't want to watch the pertinent video that's cool. Just don't make up your own thread and pollute this one.

I thought Glenn Beck did a great job and gave the very message many on this blog would endorse. That's all I'm saying with this thread. It is long but IMHO worth posting.

Beck attacks Liberalism and Progressives.

You ask "So you are proud of being a progressive liberal? And what do you have to be proud about?"

I'm proud progressives fought against slavery, Fought for a woman's right to vote, Progressives fought Jim Crow laws. Progressives fought against child labor laws nad workers right to unionized for a living wage and worker safety.
Progressives fought for Social Security and Mediacre. Progressives fought against excessive Banking fees and sudden interest rate hikes.
Progressives won against the Nazis with the leadership of FDR and Truman.

What have conservatives got to be proud of?

No they weren't, just the fourth one and it was copied and pasted with no commentary from you. You haven't watched the video, you know nothing about Beck, I'm not going to argue with the bloggers at "Crooks and Liars" and I've asked nice once. You have nothing to add.

Stay with the thread.

I have not had time to listen to the entire Beck speech, but I can agree with most of what I have heard. My main difference of opinion is with his terminology. What he calls a progressive, I have always called a liberal. This is why I have always said there were many liberal Republicans that I cannot support. Likewise, I feel that there are conservative Democrats. As a matter of fact, I know several Democrats that make Jesse Helmes look like Ted Kennedy.

I don't recall you ever answering the questions.
Surely it would not be that hard to address them again if you know the answers.

guy faulkes said...

Bennett has a valid chain of logic in his criticisms. However, I must disagree with most of them. Bennett's problem is that he seems to think the Republicans can reform slowly. There is no time for this.

Of course this is just another aspect of the debate HD and I have about supporting the lessor of two evils. HD thinks we can do this and improve things over a period of time. I think that doing this is what has made things as bad as they are. I will no longer support lesser of two evil candidates. If we have to we will come back out of the ashes.

I also must disagree with Bennett's critique of Beck using his life experience as a guide for the political process. I think that this kind of life experience is very valuable in the decision making process. I see nothing wrong with sharing it. I also see voting for the lessor of two evils as a denial that things must change and that sometimes change is painful. This corresponds very well to the denial an alcoholic has as to the problems with his lifestyle when he tells himself "I won't drink as much", but keeps on drinking.

Sorry, HD, but we will never agree on this one. We can have an honest debate about it and for that I am grateful.

guy fauleks said...

POV, you have got to be kidding. We have discussed you continually repeated talking points innumerable times. If you cannot debate the subject of the thread, either ask for a new thread, label you post off topic so it can be ignored, or hush. Your "change the subject tactic" because you cannot present a logical argument has become tiresome.

If you wish to have any claim to a relative and comprehensive post on this thread, you are going to have to watch the video and then comment on it, not your talking points. This requires cognitive effort on your part, so I guess we will not see it happen.

Anonymous (POV), It really hurts you when polls prove most people think you are incorrect, doesn't it?

HD, what did you think of beck's rendition of the reading of the text that is on the Statue of Liberty? I think it was magnificent and that his kids probably heard it so much during his practicing that it is going through their heads like a tune you can't forget.

Honest Debate said...

Guy,

Yea, we won't agree but we've been there already, cool.

I didn't read quite as much into Bennett's comments as you. For instance, I didn't think that Bennett disparaged using life experience at all. I guess that's open to interpretation.

I also didn't think he was talking about the lesser of two evils. He was just pointing out that there is a world of difference between the two parties and to lump them together does a disservice to the ones that are kicking butt and taking names. And there are some good ones. As he said, Michelle Bachmann is not the same as Barney Frank. Beck, by association, essentially says they are.

"HD thinks we can do this and improve things over a period of time. I think that doing this is what has made things as bad as they are."

I think that's fair although I disagree with the second sentence.

I too am grateful that we can have an honest debate and we pretty much have already done that on this subject. You have said many times that the Republicans need to go back to their conservative roots or a third party will emerge. We both agree on that but disagree on the damage we are willing to endure in the meantime. I guess my question to you in an effort to move this discourse forward is: Have you seen that movement towards the conservative roots since we last addressed it? I sure have, and am even thankful for Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for holding with Republicans under enormous pressure.

guy faulkes said...

HD, yes, the Republicans have moved toward their conservative roots. I do not know how genuine this movement is, but I am heartily encouraged. You made one excellent point that I agree with.

The Republicans can return to their roots and the two party system will continue to operate effectively. The system breaks down when you have liberal and liberal lite. As you have suggested, a third party will be a much more painful solution to the problem. However, it may well be faster or more permanent.

Do you think the movement within the Republican party to return to its conservative roots a genuine movement or do you think it a political ploy by liberal Republicans to ride out the storm? I have hopes that this time the movement is real.

POV, watch the video and make a comment about it. No one cares about your diversionary talking points, but I will answer one question with a question.

"Republicans need to go back to their conservative roots or a third party will emerge. " "What is it you want?" - POV

Do you not think the people got what they wanted in this regard with Brown's victory? Do you not think people getting what they want in this regard is why Bayh did not run for reelection? You can run, but you can't hide.

Sark, excellent link. It backs up points Beck made in his speech.

I agree with Glenn. Liberals want happiness and expect everyone to give it to them. We don't have a right to expect everything given to us on a platter.

I love when Glenn asks, "When did it become a shame or ridicule to become a self-made man?" Liberals don't know what self-made means. Maybe they should look it up or better yet, try it.

I'm 100% for free markets ( except health care) and opportunities for all to achieve what we need a level playing field with great public schools, military service for rich and poor alike, Estate tax so huge wealth is not just handed to the next generation but it has to be earned by that generation.

I for public education to be extended from 12 to 16 years.

I'm for Universal Health care so a man or woman with great work ethics and intelligence doesn't have to take a job at Walmart to have health care for the family when they could start a new business venture if health care were not so expensive.
Reader I think you run a small business do you have medicare or do you have to buy insurance on the open market?

Honest Debate said...

Guy,

I don't know if it's genuine or not but I am encouraged. I think many of the conservatives are emboldened by the people to speak up. Some are jumping on the bandwagon, some are trying to catch up with it and some are driving it but we are the fuel. High octane! That's what encourages me most.

Right now we have only one Senator (Scott Brown) who was elected with the mandate of defeating health care. That's just one issue but a big one. I look forward to seeing what happens in November.

Reader said...

First of all Lib, why do you care if wealth is handed to the next generaton? That's not your decision. We are planning on handing our business down to our children. When you say things like that, you sound extremely envious. I'd work on that if I were you.

Guy, I did hear Bayh say on The View today, neither party can agree on anything. He said it's an ego thing wtih running for congress. What has this country become?

Liberal POV said...

Reader

I think you missed the words HUGE WEALTH and Estate Tax. I'm all for small businesses and the few real farms left being able to pass down a small business $2 million or less without estate tax.

Reader said...

You did it again Lib. You cannot decide what a business should be worth and handed down. Please stop being so envious.

Does it bother the rest of you when they say "we've created or saved 1 million jobs. I think that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Good grief, we've got some
real winners up there, living in Lie Lie Land. It's almost getting comical. To beat it all, I helped put some of these jokers in office...you know what that means...my brain had to be functing like a liberal and only for a few seconds, blackening in that box beside the name. Lord, please forgive me.

I read Proverbs 18:2 and it reminds me of our representatives in Lie Lie Land.

Master Johnny Rico said...

Liberal Socialist Sheep POV,

Why do you want to be handed health care? Earn it. Work for it. Buy it yourself. Don't use my hard earned money to buy for you what you are either too stupid or too lazy to do for yourself. Penalizing the workers of this country for lazy folks like you will decrease U.S. productivity and place us alongside those lazy countries such as France that you happen to love so much (but are never willing to move to as you really know they are not nice places to live).

So if you want your children to have crooked, stained, ugly teeth like those found in Canada and all European countries due to lack of dental care resulting from socialized medicine, then fine, but don't expect me to want a lower standard of living for my children because you are too lazy to work for it.

You're right on the money in labeling Lib as envious. That is the desired result of the fomenters of class envy. It will not help Lib one iota if someone is made less rich through taxation. It would only make things worse.

George Will had a great speech at CPAC. IMHO it was the best one. I figured Beck was enough so I didn't link it. He made a brilliant observation on envy. He noted that it was the only deadly sin of the seven that did not provide even an instant of pleasure. So true, I'm glad I don't live there.
