3 Deaths in Same Hotel Room in Boone...

And while our local press has 'covered' the story, it seems that only WCNC Charlotte has (so far) reported that the hotel room is located directly over a gas-fired swimming pool heater  - AND, that the hotel was cited (prior to any deaths) by the Health Deparetment because of improper ventilation of carbon dioxide in that area...
.(From http://www.wcnc.com/news/Family-blames-Best-Western-after-boy-found-dead-in-hotel-210779821.html  )

"BOONE, N.C. -- The Watauga County Health Department said carbon monoxide was found at the Best Western in Boone where a 11-year-old boy died this past weekend. The health department official did not say if that is what led to the death of the child."

"NBC Charlotte learned Monday afternoon the hotel was order to correct its ventilation system immediately after a previous inspection, before the boy died. Health inspectors would not comment on what follow up happened after the order to change the system."

Restrictive regulation would stall economic growth and job creation. Let the free market sort it out.

Yeah! If Obama hadn't put so many regulations on us, the health department wouldn't have ever said anything and these people wouldn't be dead. I think Obama should be put on trial for their murder!

We have regulations. They really worked, did they not?

Democratus Rex said...

Regulations require enforcement. I am sure you agree.

guy faulkes said...

What makes you think new regulations would be enforced any better than those presently in effect? Why pass more laws when existing laws are not being enforced? Is it to make you feel good by fooling yourself into thinking you have done something?

Inn Keepers should be required to get a permit for each guest. This way a government inspection can be done prior to the guest entering the room. Please book all rooms 30 days in advance to allow for paper/computer work. The City/County should require 5 business days between bookings. All guests should be required to wear a helmet.

Sarkazein said...

Listening devises should be placed in all rooms to monitor guests breathing patterns. The NSA could handle this.

You are right Sark and Guy, doing nothing is best.

Rex- It is like Obama's (D) Cabinet member Sebelius (D) said- "Some live and some die".
The first ruling from the Obamacaretx death panel was over-ruled by a judge.

Sarkazein said...

Rex- Overruled by a Judge (R) (Reagan appointed).

Back to the motel. If it was a pool heater under the room and it generated carbon monoxide in the room, the State regulated plumber who installed the heater and vent under the plumbing permit required (if in the City) then it was regulated by code. The manufacturer of the heater has a book included with the heater showing guidelines on exactly how to set the heater in a safe manner. I guarantee there is a paper trail of regulations and responsibility that will take a pack of hungry lawyers two years to settle on.

Sark, what does that have to do with carbon monoxide poisoning in Boone?? Try to focus, I know it's hard, but try.

Sarkazein said...

Rex- Is Clawson still the mayor of Boone and is she a Democrat too? Does she also believe in the "Some live and some die" mantra of the Left? She would be responsible for overseeing the code enforcement department.

Democratus Rex said...

Sark, the "mantra" you describe is a product of your own paranoia. I agree, all democrats are responsible for all of the wrongs in society. Why are democrats even allowed to exist?

Sarkazein said...

Rex wrote- "Why are democrats even allowed to exist?"

Your guess is as good as mine. One thing is for sure, they don't resign even when caught red handed... they just keep on existing.

NewGuy said...

They exist because we no longer allow the herd to thin itself. We promote them in school even when they haven't learned to read and write. We give them trophies when they don't win anything but merely participate. We provide them with free health care, free cell phones, free housing and groceries - sometimes even automobiles - when they decide that it's more profitable to live off of others than to support themselves. We have taught them that it's an option to fail since we can penalize those who succeed and redistribute the wealth of the successful (until they wise up and either leave or decide not to produce any more themselves).

Allow them? Hell, we SUBSIDIZE them!

How true.

guy fauleks said...

It shows that there are existing preventative measures to govern these kinds of issues without the addition of more regulations that will be equally ignored.

Focus Rex, focus.

Rex- What would you have the government do above and beyond what is already required? Other than a group of fellow Democratus Rexes holding hands in a circle around the pool heater and telling each other their feelings about pool heaters in their role in global warming. As the City has taken over responsibility for the installation of pool heaters, and was aware of a violation, AND it still happened, do you blame the government? OR do you feel the government should have massive power with no responsibility?

Democratus Rex said...

So, since you know what I would do, it begs the question..What would you do to prevent this from happening? I await your reasoned answer all atwitter.

guy faulkes said...

Rex, how about enforcing present regulations before you pass others that will also be ignored?

Why did you not answer Sark's questions/

Democratus Rex said...

Guy, which question? It's more hyperbole than an actual question.

guy faulkes said...

If it is hyperbole, then you should have no trouble countering it with answers. Why have you not done so?

According to recent news articles (including this one in GoBlueRidge.net, http://www.goblueridge.net/news/20355-killer-pool-heater-qnot-the-one-permittedq
Boone Planning and Inspections is saying that the hotel's pool heater was not the one they had permitted and inspected.

Apparently - according to the article = a different heater was installed without permits AFTER the last P&I inspection.

Sarkazein said...

NewGuy- If true, and the pool heater was bootlegged in, heads will roll per existing codes and then civil law. In most states, you have to be a state licensed plumber to even uncrate a boiler for installation.

So the question remains to Democratus Rex- what would you do to establish a Utopia where bootlegging and negligent industrial accidents do not exist? What would you do to assure Nanny knows all and sees all?

NewGuy said...

Sark...somewhere I heard that they had moved the heater from one of their other properties and that it was an 'outdoor' type pool heater but was used at the new location for an indoor pool.

If all this is true then I expect everyone who bears any responsibility will be paying huge financial penalties and will also likely be prosecuted criminally.

Laws and regulations only work when they are complied with.

Sarkazein said...

NewGuy- There is no difference between an outdoor/indoor pool heater. It is all in the ventilation of said heater. Ventilation meaning stack vented to outdoors if heater is indoors. Was the heater vented too close to a room window A/C or was the vent stack leaking in a chase? Did someone accidentally drill a hole through the vent stack in the chase?Different pool heaters and size (BTU) require different ventilation as specified by the manufacturer. Yes, heads will roll. If there was an open inspection from the previous violation, and no inspector chose to work a full Friday to inspect it, then it still won't be the City's fault. And heads will roll anyway... owners, plumber, and the inspector if he took a bribe of a free lunch at the topless bar.

NewGuy said...

Sark...It's an area where I claim NO personal knowledge but, from what I understand, the outdoor heater would have likely been of a substantially higher capacity (remember, these mountains are rarely going to see temps above the 70s) and would likely require a larger vent system than what would have been acceptable for the (presumably) smaller original heater.

And, there seems to have been some corrosion problems which created leaks in the exhaust piping.

The vent for this heater was located not very far from the AC unit for the room where the fatalities occurred. Whether that was the original location as originally approved by the building department, or a later modification done without a permit has not, to my knowledge, been answered. Also unknown is whether or not the venting location MIGHT have been acceptable for the smaller heater but not for the presumably larger one (doubtful, but who knows?)

And why in hell did the authorities not do additional testing after the first two deaths occurred? Wouldn't you think that two people dying in the same room at the same time is a bit much to be a coincidence? Especially since the room apparently had a gaslog fireplace! To me, carbon monoxide would be among the chief suspects!

Finally, other former customers of the hotel are coming forward with complaints of vomiting, drowsiness, etc when staying in that room. Complaints that they claim they made to the hotel management but which apparently were never taken seriously enough.
