An Evening with Bernard Goldberg

Subject: Bernie Goldberg - Friday, August 13th

The Watauga County Republican Party is pleased to present “An Evening with Bernard Goldberg” on Friday, August 13, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. Please call Connie Baird by Sunday, August 1 to RSVP. Her number is 828-964-0430.

Who is Out of Touch? Democrats

On our comment section, someone calling self Triland had the chutzpah to write the following: “You guys (Republicans) are so out of touch it’s hilarious." From that person’s writings, we can assume he is a Democrat.

In our whole history, we probably have never had a party and their president so out of touch with the American people as today's Democrats. Worse, they don’t even care.

The following are from the latest polls:

80% of Americans disapprove of this Congress totally run by Democrats.
60% of Americans believe they are taking this country in the wrong direction and only twenty-eight percent (28%) of voters say the country is heading in the right direction
57% are against the Democrat’s major accomplishment, government health care, saying it is bad for the country. 59% even want it repealed. Only 38% approve of the program
55% are still against the Dept. of Justice law suit against Arizona and 61% would like to see their state pass a law similar to Arizona’s. Only 33% approve of the DOJ lawsuit. That means 2 to 1 against.
20% believe the trillion-dollar stimulus worked. 43% even believe it hurt.
69% to 15% margin, voters believe tax cuts are a better way to create jobs rather than more government spending. Just 28% of voters believe increased government spending is good for the economy
53% of Americans still think the federal government bailout of General Motors and Chrysler approved by the Democrat Congress was a bad idea. (Wait until they see the $41,000 plus electric car the government made GM develop and which no one will want.)

More on Upcoming Sales Tax Referendum

A group called the Watauga County Citizens Opposed to the 2010 Sales Tax Increase Referendum Committee has put out a document called the Watauga County Commissioner’s Sales Tax Fact Sheet (Propaganda) Exposed. The paper is loaded with revelatory facts. However, it is too long for me to reproduce verbatim in a blog. Therefore, I decided to outline a number of their issues and then apologize to them for doing violence to an excellently researched work.

Outlined quotes from the document:

The Watauga County Boards of Commissioners have scheduled a local referendum seeking voter approval for an additional 1/4 cents sales tax because they are required to do it, not because they want to.

The County Commissioners have included information about the Parks and Recreation Master Plan on their fact sheet. This was done in hopes of leading us to believe that the sales tax increase and the recreational funding are one and the same. Nowhere on this ballot does it state anything about the Recreational Master Plan or how the funds are to be used. It is a simple up and down vote on the tax increase.

The County Commissioners claim the additional funding will be used for recreation and then they go on to aggrandize the recreational center and community center. However, the Commissioners don’t tell us how much these projects are going to cost. The operative words the Commissioners employ are “used for.” That does not mean that the sales tax increase will “pay for.” The County Commissioners are not even required to “use” the funds for recreation.

How can the County Commissioners claim that they are going to build a recreational center and/or a community center until they know how much it is going to cost and whether the Local Government Commission is even going to approve the loan?

Note that the County Commissioners did not resolve to hold a referendum on the loans that these facilities will require as part of their resolution. However, because of the tax resolution and other County propaganda claiming a connection between the sales tax referendum and recreational funding, the County Commissioners will use a vote for this referendum as your blessing when they come before the Local Government Commission asking for approval for the loans for these facilities. (Emphasis added by Blogger)

There is much more in this paper and I hope it will be published in full in one of the local papers.

Liberal POV's Own Thread

As usual Liberal POV injected himself into what was to be an important conversation. However, because he worked so hard on his comment, I am putting it here in his own private thread.

In Watauga County You Unaffiliateds Will Make the Difference in November

In Watauga County, Republicans have the most people registered. Unaffiliateds are next and Democrats least. So, neither party can win without the unaffiliated.

If we have readers who are unaffiliated, or if any of you have friends who are unaffiliated, would you be so kind as to help us understand what issues will really make a difference to you or your friends as unaffiliated.

Thank you.

Lying About Bush's Tax Cuts

I rarely suggest listening to NPR for political analysis but I'm going to here. WFAE (90.7FM Charlotte/90.3FM Hickory) has a show at 9:00AM called "Charlotte Talks". Last week they devoted the hour to David Coates, a liberal with a book. This morning they will have Brenton Stransky, a conservative with a book. It's very rare that the conservative viewpoint is given the entire hour although they often read my emails on air and even had me in the studio once. I appreciate that but the show and host are still very liberal. It ought to be interesting as Mr. Stransky's conservative credentials seem to be solid. This is evidenced by an article in the "American Thinker" entitled "Lying About Bush's Tax Cuts". It's the best work I've seen to set the record straight.

The August 31st Referendum--Watauga County

On August 31st the citizens of Watauga County will be asked to vote on a special referendum. Are you surprised to read about this? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Most folks have focused their attention towards the general election in November. But unfortunately August 31st now commands attention, as the issue at hand is whether or not Watauga County citizens wish to see their sales sax increased from 7.75% to 8%.

When discussing the forthcoming referendum, a bit of history is needed. As you may or may not recall, our County Commissioners want to build a new $12 million recreation center. In order to pay for it, additional tax revenues are needed, thus they have scheduled the August referendum; a referendum which raises many questions.
An obvious question is whether or not Watauga County needs a new recreation center. In a recent meeting to discuss calling for the referendum, County Commissioner Chairman, Jim Deal stated, “First we need to show these items [the new recreation center] are needed, and I think we have done that.” The fact is the Commissioners have not demonstrated the need for a new recreation center. Many folks look to the wealth of recreational opportunities already available to the citizens of the High Country, and in turn wish to see the proposed $12 million project postponed. These folks understand the difference between “needs” and “wants.”

A more pressing question is can we afford a new recreation center? According to the Watauga County Financial Statements for the Years Ending 6/30/07 and 6/30/09, respectively, Watauga County’s debt has increased from $24.8 million to $104.3 million—a 421% increase. The last thing this county needs is an additional $12 million worth of indebtedness.

The most disturbing question surrounding the upcoming vote is the referendum itself. Our Commissioners have the power to increase the county sales tax without a referendum. If there is such widespread support for a new recreation center, an increase in taxes to pay for it would be wildly popular with voters. But this is an election year and increasing taxes would not be popular amongst an already over-taxed populace. Lest anyone misunderstand, The Watauga County Republican Party supports voters making these kinds of decisions, but wishes to highlight the fact that this referendum was called for political purposes. Just a few years ago the Commissioners decided not to put the issue of an $80 million new high school before the voters, but now, in this politically charged environment, they do not want to take responsibility for increasing the county sales tax.

Estimates are that an additional $1.3 million will be raised annually with the increase in the sales tax. How will this additional tax revenue be spent? Watauga County citizens should know that the $1.3 million will go directly into Watauga County’s General Fund. Taxpayers have no guarantee this money will be spent solely on a new recreation center, and face the very real possibility it will be diverted to other projects. If the additional revenue is indeed spent to pay for the recreation center, will the tax be lifted after the building is paid for? Citizens should also note that the estimated $12 million dollars needed to build the recreation center does not take into account the cost of staffing, policing, operating, and marketing of such a facility.

As you consider how you will cast your vote on August 31st, you need to ask yourself a few questions. Do you wish to see your taxes increase? Do you wish to see Watauga County increase its indebtedness in these perilous economic times? If this increase passes, Watauga County will have the have the second highest sales tax in the state of North Carolina. Only Mecklenburg County has a higher rate at 8.25%. Does Watauga County really want such a distinction?

According to a Board of Elections official, this special referendum could cost Watauga County taxpayers as much as $100,000. Don’t let this money go to waste. You can vote as early as August 13th. The only polling place open during the early voting period is the Board of Elections office in the Watauga County Court House. Voting on the August 31st referendum will be held at your usual polling place.

The most important question of all is how will the voters of Watauga County exercise their rights as citizens of this great nation? Don’t stand by and watch others make decisions that directly impact your daily life. Go to the polls and vote to keep your taxes low.

President Campaigns on Our Dime

The Tonight Show With Jay Leno
"Vice President Joe Biden has declared that the heavy lifting is over for the year, and it’s time to begin campaigning and talking about the White House’s accomplishments. The heavy lifting might be over, but it sounds like the heavy shoveling is just beginning."

Can anyone explain to me why we have to pay for Obama to jet around in our beautiful Boeing VC 25 campaigning and raising money for his party on our dime. According to a CBS report about a month ago, it costs about $100,000 an hour - an HOUR, that is - to operate Air Force One. For that kind of money, isn't he suppose to be working for us?

Mrs. Obama always flies on a U.S. government plane and they say she will be doing that when she flies to her vacation in Spain shortly.

Theme for 2010 Elections

Obama proclaims this is to be the theme for the Fall 2010 elections: "We don't have to guess how the other party will govern because we're still living with the results from the last time they governed," “It's a choice between falling backward and moving forward.”

O.K. this post is to invite you Democrats who read this blog to tell us what evidence we have that the Democrats govern better then the Republicans did assuming that Obama's theme is to keep us from going through living "the last time that Republican's governed? Following are considered major causes of the crash he said he inherited.

Republicans ran up a huge deficit. What behavior have Democrats revealed that would predict we need more of the Democrats?

Republicans got us into two very costly wars. What behavior have we seen in Democrats that predicts we would be better off with more of Democrats next time?

Republicans were accused of weakening regulatory oversight. So if that is the case, then we don’t need Democrats in the future. Today, Obama signed the biggest regulatory bill since the great depression. Problem fixed.

O.K. Democrats “what behavioral evidence will you give us that Democrats don’t run up big deficits; that they don’t keep us in costly wars, and that if weak regulation caused the problems, they fixed that and so why do we need them any more? This is my blog, so my rules say you must stick to only supporting Obama’s theme for the November election: “we are living with the results from the last time.” i.e. the greatest recession since the depression. And, in that regard “It's a choice between falling backward and moving forward.”

P.S. Note that I was kind and did not even mention the housing crisis which began the whole thing. That disaster was started with Carter’s 1977 Community Reinvestment Act which strongly encouraged banks to make mortgage loans to borrowers who either did not have the capacity or intention to pay them back. Not only that, but banks that failed to meet their quota of dubious loans were singled out for federal regulatory scrutiny.

The drive for every American to have his or her own home accelerated dramatically when Bill Clinton and the Democrats decided that owning a home was an entitlement, not a privilege. They turned Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into the engines to deliver to all Americans their housing birthright. And note, Fannie and Freddie were not even touched by this present administration, so why do we need Democrats anymore when he didn’t even fix what kicked off the “living with the results from the last time.”

It's Not Off...It's On

Weed Patch

It's been a while since we did an open thread so here ya' go. There's plenty to talk about.

The above picture is the historic bridge our farm is getting next month, you may remember the story. They began removing the deck last week.

"My Biggest Mistake"

Thanks to Sarkazein for another great contribution.

Karl Rove puts into perspective Democrat hypocrisy with his piece in the Wall Street Journal.
"My Biggest Mistake In The White House"

We've covered this ground before but with all the actual lying we're seeing these days coupled with the awakening of the masses maybe it's a good time to revisit it and put to rest the liberal meme that Bush lied us into war.

There are several more comprehensive lists of Democrat hypocritical quotes than this video but if a picture is worth a thousand words then a video should be worth a million.

Two other damning facts:
The Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 that made regime change U.S. policy.
Bush's speech to the U.N. on September 12, 2002 citing the case for war of which WMD were only part.

Feelgood Story Of The Year

This story brings reminds me of a famous painting. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of it or the artist, only the emotion it evoked in me when I saw it. My feeble attempts to find it yielded nothing. Maybe someone can help. The painting depicts an old man at a table. He has nothing to eat except for a piece of bread. The bare walls and empty house reveal his poverty. Despite that, he is deep in prayer giving thanks for what he has.

Injustice

This post is late coming, my apologies. Commenter Cinncinatus was the first to bring it up and asked the question: "Are we still a country". Others have chimed in as well.

The above video shows the incident in question as well as some insight to the character of this jerk. This one broke the story. If not for Foxnews...

Christian Adams is a patriot. He resigned as he should have. The fact that Obama's DOJ did not pursue this case is downright spooky. If you combine that with Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Van Jones and others we begin to see what a radical President we have. It's also worth noting Obama's DOJ gave ACORN a pass and there were no arrest for the SEIU beating of Kenneth Gladney. It's an abomination.

Our President is a racist.

More injustice.

The Great Prophet War by Israel

This is exciting fiction. Or, is it the-great-prophet-6-war fiction? And, like on this blog, the comments are interesting.

Republicans Do Have Plans

The Economic Freedom ActDemocrats say Republicans have no plans. Of course those of us who no longer let our news be filtered by the old media know better. "The Obama stimulus has clearly failed. It's time to get back to what we know works for job creation."

Revisiting Yahweh, Obama, and the oil spill

I see I need to point out that the comments so far to my post on Israel ARE NOT AT ALL WHAT I WROTE ABOUT. In my post, I called people’s attention to a part of Yahweh’s covenant with the Hebrews that should concern us. Gen 12:3“I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly, I must curse.”

Two different Hebrew words are used for “curse.” The first is קָלַל (qalal), which means “to be light,” also, “to treat lightly, to treat with contempt, to curse.” The second verb is אָרַר (’arar), which means “to banish, to remove from the blessing.” In summary, Yahweh said that if any group would treat the Hebrews lightly or with contempt, He would be forced to remove that group’s blessings.

The question I was raising in the thread was: “With a president who is showing anti-Israel tendencies, what can we expect as a nation to happen if God were to remove our blessings?” (Some Bible students think we are already seeing it.)

For a view of how Obama looks from Israel, see the editorial in the Jerusalem Post. (Also, I believe that even though Obama’s actions have not slowed Iran, his administration has sent a warning to Israel not to take action to protect themselves from annihilation.)

POV, Israel, Yahweh and the Oil Spill

The commenter Liberal POV responded to the post regarding God and the oil spill: Yahweh said regarding Israel: “I'll bless those who bless you; those who curse you I'll curse.” (Gen. Ch. 12, vs. 1-3) POV wrote: “Those fundamentalist Muslims sure are a crazy lot. The strange things they believe in the name of religion. Isn't it wonderful the Christians and Jews don't mix religion and politics the same way?”

POV, I can assume you meant that to be witty. Obviously POV, you do not have to believe that Yahweh has this special relationship with Israel. On the other hand, obviously you can’t prove to yourself that He does not.

For nearly 1400 years, Moses to Jesus, from empirical observation plus direct revelation, the great spiritual giants of Israel explained the meaning of their unique history. The simple message was when leaders lead the people to worship Yahweh and to obey His commandments, they are blessed. (Under Solomon for example, Israel was one of the richest nations in the world.) On the other hand, when leaders turn the people away from Yahweh, they fall under the curse. (At one point for example, they were reduced to cannibalism.)

The prophetic person who wrote Chapter 12 of Genesis, reveals that the terms of Israel’s covenant also extends to those who bless and those who curse Israel.

You are free to believe that or not. I do know that for the first time in my lifetime an American president turned against Israel. A shudder went through people who know their Bible. And, even though we as Christians live under a new and better covenant with Yahweh, we do reside here.

Presidental Rankings

The Siena College Research Institute has ranked the Presidents based on six personal attributes (background, imagination, integrity, intelligence, luck and willingness to take risks), five forms of ability (compromising, executive, leadership, communication and overall), and eight areas of accomplishment (economic, other domestic affairs, working with Congress, party leadership, Supreme Court appointments, executive branch appointments, avoiding mistakes and foreign policy). Here's the complete breakdown.

FDR wins and Obama is three notches above Reagan according to the "scholars".

The "Same Failed Policy" Gets Unanimously Confirmed

Here's a good take on it with video of Senator Obama questioning the General in 2007. There is no doubt that had Obama been running the show Harry Reid would have been right: "This war is lost". Now he validates the same Bush decision that he railed against. I suppose Obama deserves some credit for making the U-turn but his blatant, dishonest opportunism still irks me.

Obama Speaks on Immigration

He looks at one teleprompter: “I understand the frustration of those who feel we are not doing enough to close the border.” Then he swings to the other teleprompter: “On the other side, I understand those whose hearts bleed for people who only want to make a living for their families.”

Oh boy! Fair and balanced!

Not really. It’s his schtick. Come down on both sides of every debate. Sounds so college professory. A thoughtful man.

But it’s flim-flam. We have learned this man always has cards up his sleeve. He fakes hearing. Then he does what he already planned. The only thing we know for sure is it will be something the majority of us won’t like.
