From the Internet: State of the Economy
The economy is so bad that:
Banks are sending out pre-declined credit cards in the mail.
CEO's are now playing miniature golf.
Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children's names.
A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico.
Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.
Motel Six won't leave the light on anymore.
The Mafia is laying off judges.
Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.
One man was so depressed thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, his savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., that he called the Suicide Lifeline. He got a call center in Pakistan, and when he told them he was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if he could drive a truck!

How is Goss's Road Building Thingy Hit You?
NewGuy caught this: From the NC SENATE DEM CAUCUS...Sept 2009
State Senator Steve Goss was appointed Senate Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Transportation Oversight Committee. The committee is made up of 18 members; 9 from the House of Representatives and 9 from the Senate.
According to Goss’ office, the committee oversees the Department of Transportation and all of the state’s transportation policies.
After being named the co-chair of this committee, Goss said, “I am pleased with the opportunity to have an even greater voice in shaping our state’s transportation policy. Solid transportation is key to growing our economy, especially in rural North Carolina.”
Now check out today's Watauga Democrat article and tell me again what a good job Steve Goss is doing for Watauga...
Secondary road budget cut 20 percent
Published: 11:56 AM, 10/25/2010 By: Scott Nicholson
The budget for Watauga County's secondary roads was cut about 20 percent over the 2009-2010 totals, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. The Watauga County Board of Commissioners received the priority list for secondary-roads improvements during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
The anticipated allocation for the current fiscal year is $853,851, down from $1.09 million last year.
YES I WANT TO REDUCE SPENDING....but let's reduce spending on fishing piers, taj mahal high schools, multi million dollar "welcome center" on 421. Lets spend on the essentials, like secondary ROADS in Watauga!

What the Devil is a Democrat?
Addressed to reader Jack. You seem like a bright person, always looking for a debate. The following post is for you. These are principles that most Republicans can wrap themselves around. We have a consistent point of view and set of beliefs.
On the other hand, I don’t know what a Democrat is. Rather than being a party with basic beliefs, you guys seem to be a hoard of tribes bound together only by each tribe’s special interests. You include Blacks, Hispanics, labor unions, government workers, those women who believe you care about their children, lost in time Southern Democrats, college professors who have been in schools all their lives, the poor young people brainwashed by these arrested developed teachers. Others on this blog can think of more.
Jack, what binds you together other than selfish self interest? I may not respond right away as all I care about right now is getting you guys out of power before your self centeredness destroys our country.

Ten Conservative Principles
A Statement of the 10 Guiding Principles of the Conservative Movement by Robert Lumb, Oct. 24, 2010 in The Jacksonville Observer
* Conservatives believe in the Constitution and that every member of Congress should be guided by it when deciding on any piece of legislation. While the Supreme Court may be the final arbiter, we believe there would be fewer cases brought before it if those who legislate were more respectful of the Constitution in the first place. Faithfulness to the Constitution is essential for sustaining the American experiment and preserving our freedoms.
* Conservatives believe in the principle of limited government. The federal government has become a large and intrusive force that asserts the right to exercise almost unlimited power. The widespread belief among some in Congress that the federal government has the right to force individuals to buy health insurance is evidence enough that government has overstepped its bounds.
* Conservatives believe the current level of government spending is excessive and unsustainable. We believe spending on the nonessential is no longer an option and that placing a burden of oppressive debt on future generations is immoral. Our elected officials must be guided by fiscal restraint, strict budget discipline and spending priorities that emphasize what’s essential. Tough decisions will have to be made if we are to restore the nation to financial health.
* Conservatives believe that our tax system must be fundamentally reformed and that the tax burden must be reduced. We believe that poorly conceived tax policy discourages investment, punishes productive citizens and crushes American families. A comprehensive and well conceived overhaul of our tax system is the surest path to an enduring prosperity.
* Conservatives believe in individual freedom and personal responsibility. We believe that people have the right to make their own choices in life and that these choices will ultimately determine success or failure. While we recognize the need to help those who are unable to provide for themselves, no amount of government assistance will ever be enough to transform any adult who is unwilling behave responsibility. A truly compassionate society understands that dependence destroys personal freedom and insists that the able bodied take responsibility for their own lives.
* Conservatives believe that economic justice can only be achieved by a free people, engaged in free enterprise, working to meet the needs of a free market; it cannot be achieved through income redistribution, legislative fiat or the dictates of a command economy. Free market entrepreneurship is the foundation of our prosperity; property rights and the rule of law are its cornerstones.
* Conservatives believe that the first duty of government is to ensure public safety and to provide for a strong national defense. America has enemies who would harm us. If we ignore them, we do so at our peril. We believe that threats to our security must be dealt with directly; complacency is an invitation to another 9-11.
* Conservatives believe that energy independence is vital to our national security and to our economic well being. We believe the only energy sources we can rely on are those that have already proven themselves economically and technologically. As the rest of the world moves forward, the United States cannot allow itself to be held back by those who advocate for a radical and unproven restructuring of our energy economy.
* Conservatives believe in American exceptionalism and that the United States has been a force for good in the modern world. This is not a claim of perfection, nor is it an assertion of any special right; it is simply to acknowledge that in a world where genuine freedom is a rarity, the United States has played an essential role in advancing the basic human rights of all men. No nation in history has had more responsibility thrust upon it and no nation has shouldered that responsibility so well.
* Conservatives believe in the sanctity of human life, in the dignity of every human being and in the power of the human spirit to rise above the circumstances of daily life in the search for life’s eternal truths. Conservatives see “great days possible to men and women of will and vision.”

Voting Stats
Something went wrong with our little voting widget in the left column. It killed the recent comments. Until we get some new stats, I will leave it off. I think the interesting stats are that the Republicans and Democrats are almost even, plus the 600 unaffiliated. We won't know until Nov. 2, what this means. We do know that in the past more Democrats have early voted. A lot of Republicans live out in the county and it is more convenient to vote at local places in their community on election day.
A second thing we have heard is all over the country, unaffiliated are breaking against the Democrats in large numbers this election. They don't like Republicans, but they hate the left more this go around.

Fired By The Tolerant Left

I'm sure you all have heard about the recent kerfuffle on "The View" when Bill O'Reilly was a guest. On Monday night NPR's senior correspondent and Fox News contributor Juan Williams told O'Reilly this: "I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.” NPR fired him last night. Here's the story.
I wonder if Williams would have been fired had he said he gets nervous if he sees a passenger in a white sheet? So, who has the big tent, diversity of opinion stance here Fox or NPR?

Hubris Bites
This story may not be that significant but I thought it was funny. The press is so sure Sarah Palin is an idiot they tweeted all over her admonition to Tea Partiers not to "Party like it's 1773" yet. We have the Daily Kos guy, NPR's Gwen Ifill and and others wetting themselves over Palin's public display of idiocy. Oops.

Republican Men Followed by GOP Executive Committee
Our next meeting will be October 28th at 6:30pm at the Republican Headquarters on Meadowbrook. This will be just before the GOP County Executive Committee meeting at 7pm, which you are always welcome to attend.
Anyone interested in handing out fliers for our County Commissioner candidates today or Saturday, please contact Josette Maxwell at 265-4437 or email her at josettemaxwell@bellsouth.net. We'll meet at Republican HQ at 11:30 am on those days and leave to put fliers on cars in store parking lots around town. This seemed to be effective in the tax referendum vote. The goal is to hand out 5000 fliers before the election.
We are only 2 WEEKS AWAY from election day. We have plenty of phone calls to make. Contact Jim Merchant at 262.0312 or merchant10@aol.com for more details and information. I'm going to try to be at HQ next week Tuesday thru Friday, from 6-9pm if you want to join me.

You Can Serve Your Country and Community
Volunteers will be working the phones Saturday at the Republican Headquarters on Meadowbrook Lane. If you have unlimited calling on your cell phone for weekends and want to do something for your country and community, stop by and volunteer.
Guy Faulkes tells you why you are needed. He wrote "Of course early voting is set up to favor liberals. All the proof is needed is to examine where one may vote early. There are no places to do this other than in the Boone city limits. The town of Boone and the Appalachian campus are the most liberal portions of the county. By not having ALL the polling places open for early voting the deck is stacked in favor of the liberals as it takes much more effort for those that live in the more conservative portions of the county to avail themselves of this option. That this is deliberately unfair is undeniable." So we have to alert and to help the people out in the county get to the early voting polls.

Republicans Actually Won North Carolina in 2008, But. . . .
Did you know? In 2008, Republicans won on Election Day in North Carolina. John McCain won the state's presidential vote. The Republican candidate Pat McCrory won the governor's race.
Republicans lost in the two and a half weeks prior to Election Day.
Democrats made Early Voting a crucial component of their campaign strategy in North Carolina. It paid off. They won 99 of 100 counties pre-Election Day.
NC 5th have many folks who traditionally vote on election day.
Therefore, be sure to encourage everyone you know to take advantage of early voting, avoid the crowds and don't take any chances. Use this blog's information to help them find the early voting polls or even offer to drive them there. The future of this country lies in your hands!

County Taxes Under Democrats
NewGuy has left this comment:
Just checked my numbers to be sure....
In 2004, Watauga county tax burden per resident was 21st out of 100 counties...
By 2007, our local tax burden per resident had increased and made us the 16th highest burden of 100.
In 2008, we were up to 13th highest!
(when did the dems get control of the county commission?)
Since 2008, we have added about 100 MILLION DOLLARS to the county debt. Do you think our taxes will go down?

Foxx "Cleaned His Clock;" Kennedy "Fogs"
I was unable to go to the Foxx–Kennedy debate last night. So, I asked the first person I met for her impressions. After declaring that Foxx “cleaned his clock,” she added: “That man talks and talks and says nothing.”
I had to chuckle. Readers will remember that a Kennedy afficionado posted a video on our comment page which he entitled: “Billy Kennedy at his best.” In response I pointed out that Kennedy didn’t say anything. When someone talks and talks and says nothing, we psychologists label that as “talking to keep from talking.” The person fogs as he talks to make you think he is saying something. He isn’t. However, the minds of his admirers are filling in the blanks much like a psychological projective test.
The person I talked to however, did come away with the awareness that Kennedy wants to go to Washington to contribute to the Pelosi–Obama disaster.
My speaker also noted that a group of the usual suspects from Boone were sitting down front. The moderator had to call them down several times for misbehaving. One woman had even perfected a technique of coughing fits each time Virginia talked.
Anyway, I voted today. Have you?

Dan Soucek Responds to Absurd Comments on This Blog
Dan responds to the charge that he was in the service for eight years without a single promotion. First of all that is so obviously ridiculous, anyone with a single grain of intelligence would know it to be impossible. If he were not in line to be promoted, he would have been given an early discharge.
Upon graduation, Dan received the rank of second lieutenant. Then he was promoted to first lieutenant. He then became a company commander with the rank of captain. His minimum service could have been 5 years. He went for eight.
At this point, because the anonymous comments are such a load of crap, I could just pull them down from the blog. Or, I could leave them up so people can see what slimy people the opposition can be. Readers, how do you vote?

Newt Gingrich Endorses Dan Soucek for North Carolina State Senate
Hello,
The entire twentieth century came and went without a single Republican-led North Carolina Senate. Democrats won the majority during William McKinley’s presidency and never relinquished it. That’s about to change.
This year, across North Carolina strong conservative candidates stepped forward to run for the state Senate. Twelve of those candidates embody the energy, aptitude, and fresh ideas that epitomize the national Republican resurgence of 2010.
Today, I am excited to announce my official endorsement for one of those 12 challengers for the North Carolina Senate: Dan Soucek.
Dan Soucek grasps the perilous situation North Carolina finds itself in – with a $3 billion budget deficit next year created by Democrats who have increased state spending by 50 percent in just the past eight years. Wasteful spending doesn’t lead to new jobs; it leads to higher taxes.
Dan Soucek understands that small businesses are the engine of economic growth and job creation. That’s why he will work to get the government out of the way of North Carolina’s job creators by cutting burdensome regulations and reducing taxes. The solution is less government interference in the private economy, less government spending on pet projects and pork, and lower taxes for families and businesses.
Dan Soucek has the experience and the conservative values that it will take to turn the state’s economy around and put North Carolinians back to work. That's why I am pleased to endorse him in this race in this key battleground district.
Sincerely,Newt Gingrich

BULLETIN! REPUBLICANS NOW POISED TO TAKE SENATE MAJORITY
Published on DickMorris.com
Today, October 6th, is the first day this year that the Republican candidate leads in the most recent poll in ten Senate races for Democratic seats. If the Republicans hang onto these leads, they are assured of a majority!
Even more important, the Republican is moving up in all ten races even where the margin is still narrow!
The following are the polling data from the most recent survey listed on realclearpolitics.com:
North Dakota = Republican + 43%
Arkansas = Republican + 18%
Indiana = Republican + 18%
Wisconsin = Republican + 12%
Pennsylvania = Republican + 7%
Colorado = Republican + 5%
West Virginia = Republican + 5%
Illinois = Republican + 4%
Nevada = Republican + 3%
Washington = Republican + 1%
And, in Connecticut, Linda McMahon is hot on the heels of Richard Blumenthal. In New York State, the last published poll had Republican Joe DioGuardi one point behind appointed Senator Kristen Gillibrand, but that poll is now two weeks old. In Delaware, the last poll is two weeks old and showed Democrat Coons way ahead but it may well have closed since.
The only piece of bad news is that Fiorini is 3 points behind Boxer, but Barbara is still under 50% of the vote. We need to get our voters to turnout!

There Were Three Religions in the Audience
Christiane Amanpour on ABC’s “Week”, ran a special last Sunday called “Should Americans Fear Islam? On one side was Franklin Graham, plus a father who lost his son on 9/11 and a blogger who blogs about Islam. On the other side was the insidious Daisy of mosque fame, also a can’t-we-all-just-get-along mother who lost her daughter on 9/11, and a woman who had fled the female persecution of Islam but now is an apologist for Islam.
The audience was strongly stacked against the three who fear Islam. I listened to the cheers and the applause for the Muslims, as well as support for the epithets thrown at the Christians, “bigot!” “racist”, “Islamaphobe!” I realized there were not two religions in that room, but three–Islam, Christianity, and Multiculturism.
The title of the debate should have been: “Should Americans Fear Islam and Should Americans Also Fear Multiculturism?” My answer is “yes, to both.”
The following is from “The Intellectual Errors and Political Dangers of Multiculturism." The author points out that as intellectuals concluded “reason is incapable of telling us how man ought to live, because reason itself is but an invention of different cultures”. . . it follows logically that: “There is no objective ground upon which we might judge or rank the many cultures of the earth--the ‘values’ of each culture are equally valid compared to the values of any other culture.”. . . .”This is the intellectual basis of multiculturalism, and its emphasis on ‘diversity’ and ‘non-judgmentalism.’"
Somehow, modern Americans have come to believe so strongly in Multiculturism, they appear to think it is a basic principle of our founding documents. From the boos and mockery it was obvious the multiculturists in the rooms assume they have the moral high ground.
Like the other dominant religion today of Political Correctness, Multiculturism threatens to undermine the very values we treasure. The values of all cultures are not morally equivalent. It has become a matter of our self-preservation to stand up for that.

Midterm Contest
****UPDATE****
There are now 5 participants so it's official. We have us a contest.
*****
I've set the bar at 5 participants needed for a contest and we have 3. The winner gets their own thread. To participate, predictions must be made on the "Midterm Contest" Page located on the left margin under "Pages" which is under Blogger's picture. Go there, I have disallowed comments on this thread. The rules are posted on that page.
I've copied the predictions thus far from the "Crunch Time" thread to the "Midterm Contest" page. If I missed anyone please repost there. You're on your honor to stick with your original prediction.
No "Anonymous" predictions allowed, for obvious reasons. You are on your honor not to predict more than once under different names. Liberals, please find some honor.
I will try to make periodic reminders as this post works it's way down and off the main page.

Democrats Getting Dirty Was Predictable.
A few weeks back I wrote that because Democrats can't run on their record, they planned to get down and dirty. One reader challenged me on that. Well, now that it is obvious that is what the Democrats are having to do, here are some prognosticators. Dems Go Negative

Blue Dogs “The Blue Dog Coalition isn't a vehicle to help conservative Democrats influence policy. It is a marketing brand to help vulnerable Democrats deceive voters.”
I looked at the local Democrat candidate Billy Kennedy’s webpage to see if in this very conservative district, he would try to pawn himself off as a Blue Dog Democrat. I could then accuse him of playing a Trojan horse. To my amazement, he is not even talking about any of the issues that are motivating people this year. Instead, he is pure Pelosi. Where has he been?
Actually, I ran this post because of a debate I had with one of my favorite conservative commenters on this blog. I said Conservative Southern Democrat is an oxymoron. There just ain’t no such species any more. I don’t remember which of you it was, but are your ready to say uncle yet?

Just So You Know
Commenter Sarkazein provided link to this video that compares the trash left from the "One Nation" rally to the lack of trash from Glenn Becks 8/28 rally. Thanks Sark.
Liberals will whine but I think it's telling. I'm sure they would disagree. As stark as the difference is, it's nothing compared to this.

The Kiss of Death
The low-laying Algore showed up at a rally in Florida to support Democrat Senatorial candidate Kendrick Meek. How'd that work out? I'm sure Marco Rubio is thankful. RINO backstabber Charlie Christ is history. Algore will have to take his private jet back to his 9,000 square foot dungeon and sulk over his irrelevance. It's a good day.

Even the mainstream media isn't buying it. Kudos to Jake Tapper for asking the question and to the rest for piling on. Mara Liasson and Chip Reid are two I could identify. Could it be a mutiny? It's fun watching Gibbs stutter and dance.
Imagine, businesses beginning a new fiscal year without knowing what their tax liability will be. Incompetence.
