VENT PAGE IX

Number NINE in the series!

When old vent pages start "overflowing" ....a new one is started.

VENT PAGES are handy for posting of off-topic posts, rants, raves, rages, etc which might not be appropriate on other threads where adults are having serious discussions. Childish rant? Need to call another poster a name? Just feel like spouting off? Or even if you have something to say and there doesn't seem to be any other logical place to say it....THIS PAGE IS FOR YOU!

There is NO  better place for a Point Of View!

WOW! Number NINE already  in the ongoing series!

The county, The town, and the ETJ

If you are a citizen within the ETJ of a town or city, you are subject to the zoning requirements of that town or city, but are not allowed to vote for the members of the town council who now pretty much can control what you can or can't do with your property. You are being regulated, but have no say in choosing the regulators.

What you do have, for what it's worth, is some 'representation' on the town's planning commission and the town's Board of Adjustment. These representatives are, according to my understanding, chosen by the county commissioners. At least you have a voice in electing county commissioners!

Happy Birthday Congresswoman Virginia Foxx!

And we hope for many, many more to come! Thank you for your fine service to the Fifth District and to our great country!

Boehner, a Breath of Fresh Air

If you are a Republican political junky as I am, you can learn a lot from the National Journal Article on Boehner.  It is long, and you may end up reading it in chunks,or a part of it or speed reading it, but it makes one proud of what we have done for Washington.

More Strong Questions From Inquiring Mind

We just went to the Republican Fun Fest. We have only congrats to Jonathan Jordan and Dan Soucek. However, keeping up with what has become tradition, the Republican commissioner, Vince Gable let us in on their “Democrat” plan for us. Commission Gable

CastleDoctrine in NORTH CAROLINA

Among the bills signed into law this past week was HB650, the Omnibus Gun Bill.

HB 650 Omnibus Gun Bill - This bill makes multiple changes across an array of statutes related to gun possession and use. The bill’s most significant change is implementing the castle doctrine in North Carolina.

Governor Perdue Vetos Voter ID Law!

Despite support by an overwhelming majority of Americans for voter ID laws, Perdue again pulled out her veto stamp to make sure that Democrats will continue to benefit from possibly fraudulent votes. Amazing as it is, you need an ID to cash a check, rent a car, get into the governor's mansion, buy alcoholic beverages and a host of other things.

Inquiring Mind Addresses New Questions to Watauga Officials

inquiring mind posted:
New information available. We reviewed the County's file on the offers on the old WHS property. We found that even though the latest Miller Properties, Inc. offer expires August 3, 2011, the closing date can be delayed for 12 months (the Examination Period is 180 days from the date the County agrees to and signs the offer to purchase and the closing date can be as much as 180 days after the end of the Examination Period). Thanks to an Anonymous, the following was contributed to our blog to add to the new masthead:
In 1964, the United States Supreme Court heard the case of The New York Times v. Sullivan, and the law of defamation defamation changed drastically. For the first time, the Supreme Court recognized that the First Amendment, which protects an individual's freedom of speech and expression, protects even speech and expression that is defamatory. In Sullivan, the plaintiff was a public official who sued The New York Times for libel after the newspaper published certain unfavorable allegations about him.

Note to Inquiring MindInquiring Mind.

Inquiring Mind.  What you have been doing is a real service to the community.  On the other hand, you have put so much material here that I am not getting enough time to sort through it. I want to make sure that people won’t think that your issue is all this blog is now about.  I also don’t want the readers to feel we are indulging in overkill.

I am so conflicted and I don’t want to run you off.  I do understand why you would like to get all this history out there, some of which I understand you have had printed before.  Right now though I am not having enough time to pour over it.  Thus I am not having opportunity to discern if it is a good thing for us to be associated with everything written.

I hope you can live with me now pulling some of the material out and saving it to my computer for the time being? At the same time, you could keep posting where you currently want to go now that the subject is back in the headlines.

Because the high school is now a fait accompli, it would be a great contribution to this blog and to the community if you could now go back and excerpt from your writings what is bottom line germane to this current situation.

Sincerely, Blogger

Inquiring Mind Comments on School Articles

inquiring mind has left a new comment on the school issue.  The writer has reviewed the history of the bidding.  Mr. Deal, Are these facts correct?  "Think up a comical analogy for this one in answer to Watauga Democrat and High Country Press  news of new $10 million offer on the high school:

Daffy or Bugs?

I recently commented that I would prefer Daffy Duck to another Obama term. Such bold statements should be preceded by deep thought and a little research before proclaiming. I let my emotions take over and did not do so. Now that I have, I learned ol' Daffy is a lot like Obama. However, I am able to stand by my original statement because Daffy shows a willingness to at least read the Constitution.

I still should have said "Bugs Bunny".

U.S. funding for future promises lags by trillions

The federal government's financial condition deteriorated rapidly last year, far beyond the $1.5 trillion in new debt taken on to finance the budget deficit, a USA TODAY analysis shows.
The government added $5.3 trillion in new financial obligations in 2010, largely for retirement programs such as Medicare and Social Security. That brings to a record $61.6 trillion the total of financial promises not paid for.
This gap between spending commitments and revenue last year equals more than one-third of the nation's gross domestic product.
Medicare alone took on $1.8 trillion in new liabilities, more than the record deficit prompting heated debate between Congress and the White House over lifting the debt ceiling.

Republican Plans for Jobs

REPUBLICAN PLANS FOR JOBS

Attack vs Inspire

A commenter wrote “We need a candidate who is willing to go to war with his/her opponent. Make them look like the silly bunch they are and expose their many faults and weaknesses.” I know where you are coming from. But, I think we are already there.  CNN poll:

Right track 26 % wrong track 66%

All that is holding Obama up

Budget, Management, Schools and County Government

A couple of items in the news this week raise some questions in my mind.

First, the NC Legislature has passed a budget and sent it to Governor Perdue. It would appear to be "veto proof" since a few Senate Dems voted for it. Perdue, in my opinion, is most likely to either sign it, or let it pass into law without her signature. The budget provides for funding of the teachers assistants previously at issue, and adds teachers for grades 1 - 3 over the next two years. It does cut some administrative positions in the public schools. Perdue had asked for $19.9 BILLION in her budget - the bill actually provides $19.7 Billion.

Watauga Democrat Editor Responds to Blog Comment

Inquiring Mind  http://wataugarepubs.blogspot.com/2011/06/local-scandal.html  posted the following comment: “And, it is real difficult to get a letter to the editor published in the Democrat these days. The High Country Press is still willing to publish the letters. I understand from a good source that Mr. Mayer had a visit from a prominent Democrat Party leader and he was threatened with a mass exodus of subscriptions. And, to show him that they had the power, they made the call for the pull and it he got a taste of the power. It appears to have worked.”

Because I have always had my letters published in the Watauga Democrat, I sent the post above to Mr. Mayer, Watauga Democrat editor asking him if this was to be the new policy. I just did not want to waste my time contributing letters is that was the way it was to be.

Mr. Mayer responded

Vent Page V

Bumped 6/1/11

When the number of comments on a vent page make navigation a little unwieldy - a new vent page is created.

NC SENATE passes budget bill...

Just out...It looks like the NC Senate has passed the first reading of it's budget bill. This bill was changed from previous versions to put some teachers assistants back in the budget and to win over some House Democrats to hopefully cut off any Perdue veto .

It's likely that the House will vote on this by the end of the week.....Probably by next week we should have an idea of what education cuts may be for Watauga county.

Local Scandal

The suggestion has been made that the old high school should be renovated to replace the existing Harden Park School. And, this is a very good suggestion since the truth has now been revealed that the property was transferred to the County as part of a $100 + million scheme to defraud the citizens of Watauga County. However, to perpetuate this scheme,
